The construction of a huge robot has officially started in Inden, Germany. The 45m tall watchtower and landmark called “Indemann” is designed by the young Dutch office Maurer United Architects (MUA).

The building marks the new housing and recreational development of the area. It will function as an information centre, educational facility and of course there is a restaurant. The high-tech but still humanoid appearance of Indemann sets the connection between the heavy mining industry in the region and the people friendly changes that have to come.

IKEA “screw yourself”

This is not an accusation of plagiarism, don’t get me wrong it would be naive to assume that the mega giant of populist furniture IKEA could be so unprofessional. Everything is legal and the authorship are clear for the industry and the authorised patent commissions.

My concern is the long term effect of that skilful transformation and adaptation of top design to fast-furniture. Lets face it, there is hardly a household in western europe that can’t come up with at least 1 IKEA item. There are total IKEA homes from kitchen to bathrobes! Good prices and magnificent marketing! I don’t deny it, though i can argue about the prices or the quality including that paper hot-dogs or meatballs that are part of the whole enchanting trip around Ikealand. (more…)

Theme: POWER - Producing the Contemporary City

The 3rd International Architecture Biennale starts on 24 May in Rotterdam with the question: Who and what will define the future of our cities and what role can architects play in this? Curator of the third IABR is the Berlage Institute. Programme of the 3rd Biennale contains different exhibitions, a PowerLounge - for lectures and debates and the Master class: Form and the City. The main location and meeting point is Kunsthall Rotterdam and The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI).

International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam opened on 7 May 2003. Its theme was Mobility: A Room with a View, its curator Francine Houben (Mecanoo). The curator of the second biennale entitled The Flood, which opened on 26 May 2005, was Adriaan Geuze (West 8).

Koolhaas v/s Foster

There is a “remarkable similarity” between the Rak Gateway project by Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture and the CO2 -free city by Foster+Partners in Abu Dhabi. Koolhaas doesn’t directly apply an accusation of plagiarism, but he required an explanation for the striking resemblance in terms of shape, scale, and the whole concept of sustainability.

Rak Gateway, is a 4.5sq km project proposed in Ras Al Khaimah for the Rak Investment Authority. It was first launched in November 2006 and presented in March at MIPIM in Cannes, which gives OMA the determination that they were first.

A spokeswoman for Foster’s insisted that “apart from the square shape”, inspired by traditional Arabic walled cities there were no further similarities between the schemes.
